80C options, compared honestly

Section 80C gives you ₹1.5 lakh of deductions. Here's how the main options actually compare — beyond the sales pitch.

Key takeaways

  • ELSS: highest growth potential, 3-year lock-in, market risk.
  • PPF/EPF: safe and tax-free, but 15-year / till-retirement lock-ins.
  • Match the option to your horizon and risk — don't put everything in one.

How to choose

Young with a long horizon and comfort with markets? ELSS does the heavy lifting. Want guaranteed, tax-free safety? PPF. Already contributing heavily to EPF via salary? You may need less in other 80C options. Most people do best with a mix — and remember, 80C applies under the old tax regime.

The mistake to avoid

Buying a traditional insurance 'tax-saving plan' for 80C without understanding its modest returns and long lock-in. Insurance and tax-saving are different jobs — keep them separate unless an advisor shows you the real numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Which 80C option gives the best returns?
Historically ELSS, but with market risk. PPF/EPF give lower but near-guaranteed returns.
Does 80C work under the new tax regime?
Generally these deductions are an old-regime feature. Compare both regimes with an advisor.
